First, you almost always need both certificates. Procurement asks for Cyber Essentials and many primes also require Cyber Essentials Plus on top. Holding both removes the back-and-forth.
Second, the director declaration commits the organisation to the controls for the full 12 months. That commitment is real: you cannot prove the controls have held all year unless something has been scanning all year. Year-round scanning is the evidence trail.
Every high or critical vulnerability must be patched within 14 days, all year. Without continuous scanning you cannot know what is open and how long it has been that way. The audit-day scramble does not work under Danzell.
DEFCON 658 mandates Cyber Essentials. Many MOD primes and large enterprises also require Cyber Essentials Plus. Carrying both means you answer either ask without delay and without buying the other later under deadline pressure.
A 12-month report showing 99 per cent of estate patched within the 14-day window is evidence. “We try to patch” is not. Year-round scanning produces the audit trail that makes a future CE Plus assessor's job (and yours) straightforward.
